The failure of regulation was a major trigger for the global financial crisis of 2007/08. Not only were laws and regulations weak, but regulators did not apply the rules they had. The result was a system out of control, and flagrantly profligate banking practices holding sway. The subsequent revision of financial regulation has been dramatic and the consequences will be felt way in to the future.
